"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy." β Exodus 20:8 (KJV)
Beloved,
There is a beast God Himself names and describes β a king over all the children of pride. His name is Leviathan β the piercing serpent, the crooked serpent, the dragon of the sea, that old serpent the Devil and Satan. He is the adversary of every soul that keeps the commandments of God. Today we learn who Leviathan is, how to walk circumspectly in defence against him, and the day God has sworn to take him down β and why keeping God's ten commandments (Exodus 20) is the very wall that keeps him out.
π Who Is Leviathan?
π Job 41:1-3 (KJV)
"Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down? Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn? Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee?"
π Job 41:33-34 (KJV)
"Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear. He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride."
π Revelation 12:9 (KJV)
"And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."
π Revelation 20:2 (KJV)
"And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years."
Leviathan is made without fear, a king over all the children of pride. His titles name him plainly: the piercing serpent, the crooked serpent, the dragon of the sea, that old serpent the Devil and Satan (Isaiah 27:1, Revelation 12:9; 20:2). Leviathan is no myth β he is the adversary himself.
π Walk Circumspectly in Defence Against Leviathan
π Ephesians 5:15-16 (KJV)
"See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil."
π 1 Peter 5:8-9 (KJV)
"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith."
π Proverbs 16:18 (KJV)
"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."
π Ephesians 6:10-17 (KJV)
"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."
To walk circumspectly is to walk with eyes open, watching every step, because Leviathan hunts the proud. Pride goeth before destruction β and pride is the very gate through which the king of the proud enters. The defence is not negotiation: it is to be sober, be vigilant, and resist stedfast in the faith. Put on the whole armour of God β truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, the shield of faith to quench his fiery darts, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. So clothed, you shall withstand in the evil day, and having done all, stand.
π When God Will Take Leviathan Down
π Isaiah 27:1 (KJV)
"In that day the LORD with his sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent, even leviathan that crooked serpent; and he shall slay the dragon that is in the sea."
π Psalm 104:26 (KJV)
"There go the ships: there is that leviathan, whom thou hast made to play therein."
π Psalm 74:14 (KJV)
"Thou brakest the heads of leviathan in pieces, and gavest him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness."
Though Leviathan plays in the sea where the ships go (Psalm 104:26), his days are numbered. "In that day" β the day of the LORD β God Himself will punish Leviathan with His sore and great and strong sword. Already God has broken his heads in pieces (Psalm 74:14). The serpent's end is certain: the LORD slays the dragon that is in the sea.
π Keep the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20)
π Exodus 20:1-17 (KJV)
"And God spake all these words, saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
3. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain.
4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
5. Honour thy father and thy mother.
6. Thou shalt not kill.
7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.
8. Thou shalt not steal.
9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
10. Thou shalt not covet."
π Ecclesiastes 12:13 (KJV)
"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man."
π John 14:15 (KJV)
"If ye love me, keep my commandments."
π Psalm 34:7 (KJV)
"The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them."
The ten commandments are the wall of defence against Leviathan. "The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them" (Psalm 34:7). When you fear God and keep His commandments, He sets His camp round about you. Every commandment broken is a gate opened to the serpent; every commandment kept is a gate shut against him. Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
π Keep The Sabbath Holy
This Sabbath, know your enemy: Leviathan β the piercing serpent, the dragon, that old serpent the Devil and Satan. Walk circumspectly, clothed in the whole armour of God, and keep the ten commandments (Exodus 20), for in them is your defence. The LORD has sworn to punish leviathan in that day and to slay the dragon that is in the sea.
"In that day the LORD... shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent." β Isaiah 27:1 (KJV)
