Beloved,
May this Sabbath day bring you peace and rest in the LORD. Today we turn our hearts to a matter God declares with unmistakable clarity: fornication and adultery — and the one ground on which God permits divorce.
📜 Key Scripture
📖 Hebrews 13:4 (KJV)
"Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge."
📖 Matthew 19:9 (KJV)
"And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery."
God's Word is plain: the marriage bed is to be kept undefiled, and there is only one ground for divorce — fornication. Apart from that cause, to put away a spouse and marry another is adultery before God.
📖 Possess Your Vessel in Sanctification
📖 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 (KJV)
"For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God."
📖 Genesis 39:9 (KJV)
"There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?"
God's will for every one of us is sanctification — and that includes abstaining from fornication. Every one of us must know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honour, not in the lust of concupiscence as the Gentiles who know not God. Joseph set the example: when tempted by Potiphar's wife, he refused and called the act "great wickedness, and sin against God" (Genesis 39:9). Self-control over your own body is not optional — it is your sanctification.
📖 A Friend of the World Is the Enemy of God
📖 Jeremiah 3:8-9 (KJV)
"And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce... And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks."
📖 Isaiah 50:1 (KJV)
"Thus saith the LORD, Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away."
📖 James 4:4 (KJV)
"Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God."
When God's people Israel went after pagan gods, the Lord says they committed adultery against Him, and He gave faithless Israel a bill of divorce. God Himself modeled divorce for adultery when He put Israel away — "Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom I have put away?" (Isaiah 50:1).

Yet the same God who divorced Israel for her whoredom promises to forgive her and take her back: "Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you" (Jeremiah 3:14), and "I will betroth thee unto me for ever" (Hosea 2:19). So too, whoever has committed fornication or adultery can be forgiven if they repent, confess and forsake their sin, stop committing adultery, and keep God's ten commandments. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins" (1 John 1:9); "whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy" (Proverbs 28:13). And "Thou shalt not commit adultery" remains one of the ten commandments (Exodus 20:14).
