Abomination vs Defiled
Be Ye Holy, For I Am Holy — Leviticus 11:44
Beloved,
Let no one deceive you: no defiled person and no abominable person shall enter into the kingdom of God. This is written plainly for us. Hear the word of the Lord, and let it be settled at the very beginning of this message and at its end:
📖 Revelation 21:27 (KJV)
"And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life."
The Lord is not speaking of a small matter. He says nothing that defileth shall enter, and nothing that worketh abomination. Therefore we must ask: How does one become an abomination to the Lord God, and how does someone defile themselves in the eyes of the Lord? Let us search the Scriptures, for they are able to make us clean.
📚 Bible Concordance: "Abomination" and "Defiled"
Abomination (Hebrew: tow'ebah) — a detestable thing; something disgusting and loathsome, whether in worship, in morals, or in that which God has forbidden as unclean to be eaten or touched.
Defiled (Hebrew: tame') — to be made unclean or polluted; rendered unfit and unholy, whether by touching or eating the unclean, or by sin that issues from within a man.
📖 God's Dietary Law Is Not Done Away
📖 Deuteronomy 14:3 (KJV)
"Thou shalt not eat any abominable thing."
📖 Leviticus 11:46-47 (KJV)
"This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth: To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten."
The Lord gave a law of clean and unclean, and He commanded His people to make a difference between what may be eaten and what may not. He said plainly, "Thou shalt not eat any abominable thing" (Deuteronomy 14:3).
📖 The Beasts: The Swine, the Camel, the Coney, the Hare
📖 Leviticus 11:2-8 (KJV)
"Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat. Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you. And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you."
Here the Lord names them: the camel, the coney, the hare, and the swine — "they are unclean to you." Of the swine He said, "Of their flesh shall ye not eat."
📖 Whatsoever Hath Not Fins and Scales
📖 Leviticus 11:9-12 (KJV)
"These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat. And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you: They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination. Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you."
📖 Deuteronomy 14:9-10 (KJV)
"These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat: And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you."
Notice the Lord's own word: that which hath no fins nor scales "shall be an abomination unto you" (Leviticus 11:12). He did not say it merely makes you uncomfortable — He called it an abomination.
📖 The Fowls and Every Creeping Thing
📖 Leviticus 11:13-19 (KJV)
"And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray, And the vulture, and the kite after his kind; Every raven after his kind; And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind, And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl, And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle, And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat."
📖 Leviticus 11:41-42 (KJV)
"And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten. Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination."
The eagle, the vulture, the owl, the raven, the swan, the stork, the bat — of these the Lord said they "are an abomination." And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, "them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination."
📖 Ye Shall Not Make Yourselves Abominable
📖 Leviticus 11:43-45 (KJV)
"Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby. For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy."
Here is the heart of it: eating the unclean does not merely make you unclean — it makes you abominable, and defiled. The Lord commands, "ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy." His reason never changed: "I am the LORD."
📖 Isaiah's Warning: Eating Swine's Flesh
📖 Isaiah 65:4 (KJV)
"Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine's flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels;"
📖 Isaiah 66:17 (KJV)
"They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the LORD."
Isaiah does not treat the eating of swine's flesh as a light thing. Those who eat "swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse" are numbered among those who "shall be consumed together, saith the LORD."
📖 Daniel Purposed in His Heart Not to Defile Himself
📖 Daniel 1:8 (KJV)
"But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself."
📖 Ezekiel 4:14 (KJV)
"Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! behold, my soul hath not been polluted: for from my youth up even till now have I not eaten of that which dieth of itself, or is torn in pieces; neither came there abominable flesh into my mouth."
Daniel chose rather to refuse the king's meat than to defile himself. And Ezekiel testified that no abominable flesh ever came into his mouth. So must we purpose in our hearts today.
📖 Defiled By What Cometh Out of the Mouth
📖 Matthew 15:11,18-20 (KJV)
"Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. ... But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man."
📖 Mark 7:20-23 (KJV)
"And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man."
📖 1 Peter 1:15-16 (KJV)
"But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy."
But hear the Lord rightly: this is not permission to eat the unclean. It is a second command to keep yourself clean on the other side as well. Do not become an abomination by what you eat, and do not defile yourself by what comes out — for "out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man" (Matthew 15:19-20).
📖 Your Body Is the Temple of God
📖 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 (KJV)
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are."
📖 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (KJV)
"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."
📖 Titus 1:15 (KJV)
"Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled."
Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost. It is not your own; you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and take heed: "If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy" (1 Corinthians 3:17). Yet unto the pure all things are pure — it is the defiled and unbelieving whose very mind and conscience is defiled (Titus 1:15).
📌 Keep Yourself Clean
This Sabbath, purpose in your heart, as Daniel did, not to defile yourself. Keep yourself clean on every side: refuse the abominable and the unclean that God forbade you to eat, and refuse the defilement that proceeds out of the heart and the mouth. Sanctify yourselves, and be ye holy; for I am holy (Leviticus 11:44).
And let this be settled in your heart both now and at the end: "There shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life" (Revelation 21:27).
📖 Revelation 21:27 (KJV) — Remember It Both Now and at the End
"And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life."
Beloved, the word is the same at the beginning and at the end: no defiled person and no abominable person shall enter into the kingdom of God. So keep yourself clean — by what you refuse to eat, and by what you refuse to let come forth from your heart. Be holy, for the Lord your God is holy.
